How to use the XPath Tester?

An XPath Tester allows you to test XPath expressions against an XML document. It helps you select specific elements and data within an XML structure and verify that your XPath query works as expected.

Simply enter your XML document and XPath expression into the tester and run the test. The tool evaluates the expression and displays the matching elements or values from the document.

XPath is used to navigate and select elements, attributes, and values within XML documents. It is commonly used with XML processing, web automation, data extraction, and other development tasks.

Yes. You can test XPath expressions using elements, attributes, conditions, wildcards, and other common XPath features to select specific data from an XML document.

No. CodeLiqo’s XPath Tester processes your XML and XPath expression directly in your browser. Your data does not need to be uploaded to a remote server for testing, helping keep your information on your device.

What Does XPath Tester Do?

XPath Tester allows you to query an XML document using an XPath expression and find the elements that match the selected path. You can enter your XML in the XML Input section and then write an XPath expression to search for specific elements or values.

For example, you can use this XML document:

<users>
  <user id="1">
    <name>CodeLiqo</name>
    <role>developer</role>
    <active>true</active>
  </user>
  <user id="2">
    <name>Alice</name>
    <role>designer</role>
    <active>true</active>
  </user>
  <user id="3">
    <name>John</name>
    <role>developer</role>
    <active>false</active>
  </user>
</users>

If you enter the XPath expression: /users/user/name

the tool searches the XML document for every name element inside user. The XPath Results section will then display the elements that match the expression.

In this example, the results would include the names CodeLiqo, Alice, and John. You can also use more specific XPath expressions to query particular elements, attributes, or parts of the XML structure.

Check the example image below to see how XPath Tester returns the elements that match an XPath expression. ↓

XPath Tester is useful when working with XML data, APIs, configuration files, or applications where you need to locate specific information inside a structured XML document. Testing an XPath expression before using it in an application can help verify that it selects the expected elements.

The tool also provides quick example XPath expressions that can help you test common queries. Everything is processed directly in your browser, making it convenient for experimenting with XPath without installing additional software.
